Hedebyborna, based on a novel by Sven Delblanc, is one of Sweden’s most popular TV shows. More than half of Sweden’s population saw the series when it premiered in 1978. Since then it has been rerun numerous times, most recently in 2009, when no fewer than 740,000 Swedes followed what happened to Baron Urse, Svensson, Nicodemus, Fjärsman and all other people in Hedeby.

Here we present for the first time director Hakan Ersgård’s own story of the troubled and arduous advent of making Hedebyborna. There are also interviews with the cast, a unique artwork, and never before published letters from Sven Delblanc about the complicated script writing.

This is the story of a director’s difficulties to realize an artistic vision in an almost hostile environment. It is also the story of a 1970s, which in many cases feels like an alien world. But above all it is the story of Swedish television’s most beloved series – Hedebyborna.

Completed and edited by Jesper Ersgård.
